Happy Birthday, Dr. Seuss!!

March 2nd is Dr. Seuss's birthday.  If you have children, or are a teacher to children, you know this.
I wanted to share a few of my favorite edibles for the day, since many classrooms celebrate...

A nilla wafer in the middle of a bunch of melted green chocolate.  Clever, huh??
Marshmallows on a stick, and red edible markers.  LOVE!!

I'd use green chocolate here for Green Eggs and Ham, but you get the idea!!

And this one is simply over the TOP!!
You can find a ton more here, along with links to the above creations on my Pinterest Board, "Dr. Seuss Stuff I love."  Yes, I have a whole board dedicated to my love of Seuss.  :)

Enjoy your day!!

Rep. Causer Pushed For More Opportunities To Ride ATV's On State Forest Land

Causer Questions DCNR About ATVs
The Department of Conservation and Natural Resources took its turn in front of the House Appropriations Committee this morning, and State Representative Marty Causer asked why the agency has not moved to increase the number of publicly accessible ATV trails in Pennsylvania’s state forests.

"We pay ATV registration fees and yet we have limited opportunities in our area to ride those ATVs on legitimate legal trails," Causer said after the hearing. "And we all know that we have very significant amounts of state forest land; and if we’re going to have the state forest land, if we’re going to pay these ATV registration fees; we should have opportunities to ride those ATVs."
Causer added that increased opportunities to ride ATVs on state forest trails would reduce problems caused by ATV riders trespassing on private land.

He said he also wants to know how much money in the ATV fund and what it’s being used for.

PFBC Executive Director Presents Annual Report to House Committee

PFBC Executive Director Presents Annual Report to House Committee Urges Legislators to Support Various Bills

HARRISBURG, Pa – Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC) Executive Director John Arway formally presented the agency’s 2011 Annual Report to the House Game and Fisheries Committee today. In his remarks, Mr. Arway reiterated that one of the agency’s top goals in its five-year strategic plan is to identify alternative funding sources in order to sustain the agency.

“My hope is that we can work together to find supplemental funding so we can eventually lower the cost of a general fishing license,” he said. “This will get more people fishing, which will also add revenue to the Commonwealth’s General Fund.”

Mr. Arway urged the General Assembly to support several pending pieces of legislation, including Senate Bill 1049, which would provide the PFBC with the flexibility to creatively market the fishing and boating experience.

“This bipartisan legislation is critical for the agency’s survival,” he said. “It takes the innovative approach of allowing us to sell multi-year fishing licenses and experiment with creative marketing packages.” Mr. Arway said the legislation could benefit the agency by ensuring greater revenue stability and predictability.

Mr. Arway also thanked legislators and Gov. Corbett for passing Marcellus shale impact fee legislation, which allocates $1 million annual to the PFBC for efforts related to permit reviews.

While securing the PFBC’s financial future is a top priority, Mr. Arway said that the agency remains committed to fulfilling other strategic goals, including protecting and conserving aquatic resources and habitats.

Last October, for example, the PFBC joined Trout Unlimited, the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and other partners in celebrating improvements to the West Branch Susquehanna River and its many tributaries. The overall health of the watershed has improved greatly as compared to 25 years ago.

Also last year, the PFBC added nearly 100 new waters to the state’s list of wild trout streams, raising the total number of documented waterways which support naturally reproducing populations of trout to more than 3,500. The changes resulted from recent stream surveys undertaken as part of the Unassessed Waters Initiative, a collaborative effort among the PFBC, local colleges and universities, and conservation groups.

“The wild trout stream designation has regulatory significance because wetlands that are located in or along the floodplain of the reach of a wild trout stream are considered exceptional value wetlands by DEP and are entitled to the highest level of protection,” Mr. Arway said. “Additionally, our Class A Wild Trout Streams – the best of our best – are protected by DEP as High Quality-Coldwater Fisheries.”

During his remarks, Mr. Arway asked committee members to sign on as co-sponsors on a proposed bill that would create a new category of offenses within the Fish and Boat Code for serious poaching violations. The proposed bill would also increase the duration for which the PFBC’s board of commissioners would be permitted to revoke an individual’s fishing or boating privileges.

Mr. Arway also provided legislators with updates on the list of high-hazard, unsafe dams across the Commonwealth and with recent changes to annual stocking schedules.

In closing his testimony, Mr. Arway welcomed the new class of waterways conservation officers and thanked legislators for their support of House Bill 1417, which increases the penalty for assaulting an officer.

“These men and women face potentially dangerous situations every day and they deserve the best protection we can provide,” he said.

The PFBC 2011 Annual Report can be found on the agency’s website at: http://fishandboat.com/promo/annualreport/2011ann_rpt.pdf.

The mission of the Fish and Boat Commission is to protect, conserve, and enhance the Commonwealth’s aquatic resources and provide fishing and boating opportunities. For more information about fishing and boating in Pennsylvania, please visit our website at www.fishandboat.com.

We all know that there are 365 days in a year, but, in actuality, it takes the earth approximately 365 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes, and 46 seconds to make one trip around the sun. So, to keep our calendar system on track with nature we must add an extra day every four years to the calendar. We call that a Leap Year.

Leap years occur every 4 years. Well, almost. It's a little confusing, but if you go to timeanddate.com, they'll tell you all about that.

We had only 4 days with 1" of snow or more on the ground. The greatest snow depth was 2" on the 25th. We recorded fog on four mornings and glaze on one morning.

I wanted to focus a whole week on just him.  I took a few pictures of him in his kindergarten classroom.  One with his favorite things--my iPhone, playing basketball, going to a Cavs Game, 100 days of school, his siblings, the dog--usual stuff.  I also took a few tags off his clothing and saved them as memorabilia (the Superman tag was one.)  I knew I'd score cool things during his birthday week...
I used a few printables, a few elements from the BH kit, October Afternoon alphas, and stamps this week.  And since it was also Valentine's week, and our daughter's yearly performance at a Cav's halftime show, I had to include that.  So...

I used a 6x12 page protector and added all those extra pics.  Valentine's Day, his birthday afternoon lunch with me at Chuck E. Cheese...
And on the flip side...my daughter's performance at halftime, along with a collage of pics from the Cavs game (we're big fans in our house--basketball rules my life.  Seriously.)
I'm finding that I like the challenge of the weekly theme.  It isn't getting old yet.  In fact, just the opposite!  I look forward to doing more, and have even added a few ideas to my original list.  How are you doing so far??

Enjoy your day!!

Cabot Gas & Oil To Donate Million + To New Hospital

Marcellus drilling company donates more than $1 million to hospital

DONALD GILLILAND, The Patriot-News By DONALD GILLILAND, The Patriot-News

Cabot Oil & Gas, the company at the center of controversy over drilling for gas in Dimock, announced Tuesday it will be donating more than $1 million to the construction of a new hospital in Susquehanna County.

Cabot is giving the project $1 million and is offering to match other donations up to an additional $1 million, to raise a total of $3 million for the project.

“We are very fortunate to have Cabot so generously providing the leadership and the resources to encourage private investment in our new hospital,” said Rex Catlin, CEO of the Endless Mountain Health System. “Now our medical staff and employees will be in a facility that mirrors their high quality.”

Cabot CEO Dan Dinges said, “Similar to jobs and education, available health care helps define a community. We want to make sure we are investing in all three.”

The project includes a multi-specialty physician suite, a six-bay emergency department with an airborne infection isolation room, cardiac/trauma room and a helipad.

Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection fined Cabot more than $240,000 in 2010, saying the company’s faulty well casings allowed natural gas to migrate into local water wells. More...

Ed. Note: Cabot was ordered by PA DEP to pay $12 Million to replace the water to some Dimock residents, but that order was rescinded as the administration in Harrisburg changed from Rendell to Corbett. EPA is now involved in the investigation of the water contamination there.

An RFL Special Investigation into Hydrofracking. Dimock, PA is a town so divided over gas drilling - the two sides describe the fight as a civil war.

On the one hand, there are people who claim the health consequences of hydrofracking are so severe ,it contaminated their water and left them unable to have kids.

On the other hand, there's people who say it's the best thing that ever happened to Dimock. But no matter which side you speak to...everyone agrees, it's changed their community.

Rotary learns about sleep apnea

Dr. Beverly Prince gave a presentation to the Coudersport Rotary Club recently about the importance of sleep and the many factors that go into, and can disrupt, the sleep cycle.

Dr. Prince, who oversees the sleep lab at the hospital, discussed how scientists began studying sleep in the 1950s during the race between the United States and the Soviet Union in sending a man into space.

Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder where the body does not get enough oxygen, according to Dr. Prince, and can happen in a two different ways. Sleep apnea can be termed as obstructive sleep apnea, which is a blockage of the airway which causes the person to stop sleeping. Another form of sleep apnea is central sleep apnea which occurs when the brain stops sending messages to the lungs for regular breathing.

In order for the person to function at a normal level, the body needs a certain amount of sleep and must experience the four stages of sleep, especially the fourth stage to feel relaxed.

Dr. Prince also discussed diagnosis and treatment of sleep apnea. The full-service sleep lab at CCMH is one option, while home sleep studies are also available.
