The Winners of the Main Event...

I just got back from seeing the movie Water For Elephants (I must say Rob P. looks much better as a 20's circus vet than a vampire and Reese Witherspoon's circus performer outfits are fabulous!) so I am primed and ready to give away the fabulous circus prizes from Graphic 45 and My Mind's Eye.  Thanks to everyone that played along.  I loved seeing your votes roll in.  The winners of this week's contest are:

Kristy-who thinks clowns are mostly silly and fun, but sometimes creepy
J-Bird-who wishes Facebook had a "Love" button
April-who normally doesn't like things on Facebook, but likes Simply KellyB (thank you!)

Be sure to tune in Monday for our next giveaway from Fancy Pant's Designs.  You won't want to miss it!

I'm back from a wonderful vacation with family in South Carolina and Georgia. I'll be back soon to share a few of my favorite photos, and a recap. Feels good to be home...

diy Easter cards

I know this is a little late, but it may be a good idea for next year. My inspiration for making Easter cards this year came from good ole' Martha. She made some really cute egg cards with oval cutouts and a patterend piece of fabric. You can find them here. So cute.

Instead of doing an egg, I did an Easter Bunny (mostly cause I had this easter bunny cookie cutter). I just traced the cookie cutter shape onto a piece of patterned paper and a 5x7 card.

(I bought my 5x7 cards at Michaels with a 40% off coupon, $3 for 12 cards and envelopes).

I cut out the shape with a craft knife, bought at any craft store or store that sells crafting supplies.

(I traced the bunny head onto the 5x7 card and the patterned piece of paper.)

I then just used a basic glue stick to glue the cutout shapes onto the cards. I tried using patterned paper that has a pattern on both sides, so that when you turned the card around there was a design.

When you turned the card around, I had our Easter picture and a little "love You".

As my son would say, "easy peasy lemon squeezy, stick a pickle up your nose" ???? No need to do the later. ;)

Random Me (Thanks, Trish, for the Assignment)

I loved reading Trish's post from yesterday--so fun learning all those tidbits, and then I was so happy to see her command at the end of her post for the design team to "spill it," because I cam home exhausted from some after-school training. So, I am taking her invitation to do a copy-cat post:

Food: I never met a food I didn't like (well, except for okra an organ meats). Hence my weight struggles. I don't love to cook, but I love to eat out. I love tapas because I can sample lots of things at one time. And probably my favorite place to eat is a little Vietnamese restaurant called Lucky Corner. I always get the shrimp and scallops with black pepper sauce.
Color: I always say it's a tie between pink and purple (still a kid at heart), but the walls in my house are yellow (except my scraproom--which has red walls). My previous car was a magenta Capri convertible--no lie!
Animals: I have three cats and a bearded dragon named Leo, who comes to school with me during the week.
Dessert: Creme brulee. Cheesecake. Ice cream. Brownies with nuts. Baklava. Unfortunately, I've never met a dessert I didn't love.
Artist: Oh, my playlist makes me look like I have multiple personalities. I love, love, love Black-Eyed Peas, but I listen to classic rock a lot. Love Aerosmith, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Bad Company, Van Halen, AC/DC, Led Zeppelin... And I'm also a top 40's girl.
Pair of shoes: Sensible Maryjane flats. But lately I've started getting more adventurous with my sandals. Love the gladiator-style sandals that started becoming popular last summer.
Outfit: Black travel knits. I wear them almost exclusively--the pants and a shell along with a jacket.
Skinny jeans: Well, if I ever get skinny, I would love to buy some!
Brand: Clothing--love Chico's and Coldwater Creek. Love Philosophy lotions and shower gels.
Perfume: Annabelle by Shelley Kyle. It smells like grapefruit.
Accessory: Sparkly necklaces from Chico's. I have almost 100.
City: I live in a small town called Poolesville in Maryland. Population 4,883. Love it. It's got a really small-town feel, but we're only 20 minutes from civilization in all directions. We often cross the Potomac River on a small historic ferry to get to Leesburg, Virginia. We're a suburb of Washington, DC, and can be downtown in 40 minutes.
Hobbies: Scrapbooking. Reading, though I don't read as much as I used to since I started scrapping. I've been in a book club for going on 17 years. I also make these little word thingies for my students (I call them "previously owned words.". Hard to explain, so maybe I'll show you a picture. I give them to my students as little gifts, instead of candy. They like to write poems off of them. I spend a lot of time making these, so I guess you could consider it a hobby! Oh, and I love to write poetry, too.

Beauty Products: Bare minerals. I love eyeshadow and I have a gazillion colors.
Holiday: Definitely Christmas. Family, presents, sparkly lights...
Snack: Hummus and crackers.
Movie: It's a tie between the Austin Powers movies and Silence of the Lambs. (Yes, I realize that makes me weird.)
Song: I could give you my top 100 but not my favorite. A couple that top my list: Boom Boom Pow by Black Eyed Peas, Back in Black by AC/DC, Sweet Emotion by Aerosmith, Magic Carpet Ride by Steppenwolf.
Guilty Pleasure: Playing Bejeweled Bliz and Zuma.

Seven things you may or may not know about me...

1. I have a serious addiction to loose tea. I keep discovering favorite flavors. My current favorite is Marshmallow Treat Green Tea by 52teas.com

2. My husband and I will celebrate our 30th anniversary in July. I got married when I was 17.

3. I lived in Bolivia when three times I was a kid, for a total of about two and a half years.

4. I've taught fifth grade for 20 out of the 21 years I've been teaching. My favorite subject to teach is writing. I wrote the fifth grade writing curriculum for my school district.

5. I believe in ghosts. Mainly because I lived in a haunted house in Bolivia.

6. I'm on Weight Watchers and have lost 60 pounds. I still have about 50 to lose. :(

7. I'm a huge procrastinator and perfectionist.

That was fun! Maybe there's a scrapbook page hiding in this post! Thanks, Trish, for the challenge!

May Day ~ May 1

Tulips

Aah spring, glorious spring! The long anticipated season of sunshine and renewed life. Gone is the snow, gone is the ice, gone are the gray skies. We say hello to warm, gentle breezes, new budding leaves, bluer skies and greener grass, and, lucky us, we have a holiday to celebrate this wonderful time of year!

May Day represents a plethora of various holidays celebrated all over the world. It was believed to have begun in ancient times as a Gaelic, pagan holiday, called Beltane. May 1st was thought of as the mid year mark, or the first day of summer, November 1st being the first day of the year. During Beltane, strange rituals were practiced, such as pregnant women running through fire to ensure an easy birth.

In ancient Rome, May Day was celebrated as a time of spring fertility. A time when they honored Flora, the goddess of spring.

Pilgrims later brought May Day to America, but Puritans quickly condemned it as being immoral, which is why it is not as widely celebrated in America as it is in other places around the world.

In the late 1900's, May Day was taken up in America as a Labor Day of sorts, celebrating worker's rights. It stemmed from protests against the 12 to 14 hour work day. Europe adopted the sentiments of this holiday and it remains strong there today.

In Hawaii, May Day is celebrated as Lei Day. Many festivities are held including putting lei's around each others necks accompanied by a traditional kiss on the cheek.

The traditions and stories surrounding May Day vary from place to place, in general though, May Day is a celebration of the arrival of spring.

May Pole - A May Pole is a tall wooden pole erected to celebrate May Day. It is decorated with long colorful ribbons, flowers, and greenery. It originated with the Beltane observances. People hold on to the ribbons and do a ring dance around the pole. You can find May Pole dance instructions here.

May Baskets - Common to most May Day celebrations is the predominant use of flowers. One popular tradition, which your grandparents may remember from their childhood, is the May Basket. People hang a basket filled with spring flowers or small gifts and treats on a neighbor's doorknob. The idea is to get away without being caught or the neighbor can give you a kiss. (So, if you think your neighbor is a hotsy totsy, you may want to run away very slowly) :0)

Important Tips for Car Rental in Easter

Car Rental FranceThe rental car will be even better in this Easter because of promotions that have several car rental agencies for this holiday period where you can save and enjoy more during your trip, whether family or individual.

When you rent a car, transform the car's handling in a nice party, but to help you make the most of this unique opportunity to go out and distract you have to book in advance.

Mother's Day Cards and Oreos

My clock currently reads 2:40 am.  I have finally decided to get up out of bed and start crafting (as opposed to lying sleepless in bed thinking about crafting!) I may have also just caved and eaten 3 Oreos...make that 5 Oreos. I have so many projects and ideas running through my head tonight, but a combination of cardmaking and Mother's Day are coming to the surface.  I thought I would share a few of my favorite Mother's Day cards that I have found in my inspiration hunt.
Love the idea of the momma bird with the babies.  So cute.
The pop up butterflies give this card so much dimension.  I also love the use of the fence border punch.

If you are looking to go the vintage route with your cards this year, here are a few images that I love. Feel free to print them out and use them on your creations.
I am full of ideas, now I am off to get to the actual crafting part... and possibly some sleep.

More than you probably wanted to know about me...

I saw this on Kristina Proffitt's blog (love her!) and lifted the idea. Tidbits about me, in case you didn't know...

Food: I LOVE brisket and beef tenderloin. Luckily, I learned how to cook both!
Color: I love red. It is scattered throughout our home everywhere. I'm also a big fan of that powder blue lately.
Animals: We have a pet turtle named Dennis who is nocturnal and sometimes keeps us up at night (rearranging the large rocks in his habitat). We also have 18 fish in our pond. Six are babies!
Dessert: I'm not a fan of pastry or bakery really. I do love ice cream, however.
Artist: I have a pretty eclectic playlist. I have always loved Sting. Lately, I can't stop listening to Adele's new CD--21. LOVE it. Enjoying the new Foo Fighters one, too. I listen to a lot of Pink, Katy Perry, and Mumford & Sons lately as well. I could go on. I blame my friend Amy for my iTunes addiction.
Pair of shoes: I prefer going barefoot! But if I had to pick, anything that slides on and off easily.
Outfit: My favorite jeans, white t-shirt, cardigan and cute shoes.
Skinny jeans: Never owned a pair and never will.
Brand: Target. I could live there. I also adore Costco.
Perfume: Happy by Clinique. I've worn it for years, and it is heavenly.
Accessory: The heart necklace my hubby bought me on my first Mother's Day. I love it.
City: I live in a western suburb of Cleveland called N. Ridgeville. It is a booming metropolis. Okay, maybe not...
Hobbies: Photography, Scrapbooking, Gardening and Landscape Design.
Beauty Products: Clinique make up and perfume
Holiday: Christmas. But Halloween is a close second.
Snack: Snyder's Ranch Pretzel Bits. My youngest son and I hoard them from the rest of the family. Is that a bad thing?
Movie: The Way We Were. Anything with a bittersweet ending brings me to my knees. I love them. The way Barbra brushes his bangs away from his face in the end, when he asks about their daughter...((sigh!))...
Song: The last one I heard on the radio.
Guilty Pleasure: Diet coke. If I could have it hooked up in an IV form, I would. I seriously need to curb my addiction. I think my family is considering an intervention at this point.

Seven things you may or may not know about me...
1. My first job was @ Ponderosa. Everyone should work in the food industry sometime in their life. Worst. Job. Ever.

2. I'm a germaphobe. I carry hand sanitizer everywhere I go and cringe when I have to use a public restroom.

3. I am not ticklish. This drives my family nuts. I'm just not! Tee hee!

4. I hate it when I hear people use the word, "retard," especially when referring to other people as slang. I usually correct people when I hear it. It is my biggest pet peeve.

5. I pray a lot and consider myself very spiritual. But I'm not a big fan of organized religion and I struggle with that a lot.

6. When I'm upset, I either clean or eat.

7. I check in on my parents every single day. They live a mile from me and are both home-bound, so they depend on me for a lot of daily living things. I am blessed beyond measure to help them out, and to work from home. So, thank YOU for enabling me to do just that.

There are SO many blogs that I read and love so I won't call just anyone out, but if you read this and want to participate in it - just fill out the above on your blog and send me a link! I'd love to learn a bit more about YOU, too! Design team--spill it! :)

Master Order and Lord Choas

History

Master Order and Lord Chaos are two "brother" entities that embodies their namesake and balance the other. They seem to be all-powerful and nearly all-knowing. The duo are rarely seen, but have several notable appearances. They manipulated Spider-Man into getting Warlock to battle the villain Thanos. They watched Odin and Dormammu play a "cosmic game of chess". The duo helped battle against the god-like Beyonder. Then, they imprisoned the In-Betweener (their servant turned evil). Later, they are seen at Eon's (another cosmic entity) funeral. In their most recent appearance, they (and other "abstract" cosmic entities) deemed Thanos unworthy of the Infinity Gauntlet and attacked him, but soon turn their attention on Nebula, when she got the gauntlet. They were seen witnessing Warlock's "cosmic trial" to see if he is worthy of the gaunlet.

Teacher Appreciation Week

Last year, I walked around our children's school and took random shots of things. I edited the pictures and added the text to them, creating posters (sized 8x10.)
They look cool in frames all around the school. Sometimes one even gets noticed and then they stop to ask, "Hey, is that our school?" Makes me laugh...

I was a special education teacher for many years (and will someday return to teaching, I imagine), so it has a special place in my heart. Please encourage your children to reach out and thank their teacher. It doesn't have to cost a lot to be thoughtful.

Skip to my Lou has put together a great list of blogs who have awesome ideas for Teacher Appreciation Week (May 2-7, 2011.) You can check them out here.

Take Care while Renting a Car at Abroad

Car Rental France
Car Rental:
In a country of your dreams you can rent a car. It is cheaper to execute the contract direct to the host country. Agents firms are in every airport and hotel. However, the machines are free for your arrival may not be available. Consequently, it is wiser to worry in advance.

The car can be booked via the Internet. Now there are pan-European sites. Just send your request. All options must be specified at once.

Direct rental car will cost an average $ 35 per day. The cost of insurance may deductible from damage and from theft - even at $ 5. As the cost of rent, they pay for each day of rental. The total rate includes taxes applicable in the host country. Each state has its own levies for example, in Austria mandatory road tax (Contract Tax) at a rate of 1% of the rental cost.

If you take a rental car at the airport, you have to unfasten the airport taxes (from 10 to 20% of the contract). And if you're going to turn the steering wheel shifts then for the second driver to take you a few dollars as a VAS.

By the way, be careful when booking a car online. Not all charges included in the amount that is displayed on the monitor. In Germany and Spain can pay the rent in cash. And in Italy, France, Holland and Sweden to pay for the required need a credit card.

Of the contract in your account will be blocked deposit at the rate of 100% of the cost plus 30% (for petrol and VAS). If you return the car intact, then the deposit will write off only the actual cost of the lease.

Before you sit behind the wheel of a rented car, representatives of the company other than a lease agreement must sign the inspection sheet (Check-List). Make sure all the shortcomings down to the smallest scratches and incomplete fuel tank have been made to this document. Otherwise, at the end of all the damage forced to pay out of your wallet. However, your liability is limited franchise Collision Damage Waiver, i.e., whatever damage you may have caused the vehicle, the penalty cannot exceed the deductible - 300-500 USD it’s depending on country of residence.

Documents required for car travel abroad: incorporation documents for a car, international driver's license and insurance - a Green Card. When crossing the border each needs to show proof of ownership of the machine, residence registration and insurance. If you operate the machine under power of attorney shall make a notarized authorization from the owner to export cars abroad.

The car should not be external mechanical damage to the hull or cracks in the glass. Often asked include emergency gang, near and far light. A car with blacked-out frontal and front side windows in the EU will not be allowed (except when the tinting is done by the manufacturer as specified in data sheet). Trap warning is better to leave the house, as in most countries, the use of such devices is prohibited.

For the mandatory equipment, which must be completed by car, moving across Europe, are parking disc, emergency supplies, warning triangle, fire extinguisher and first aid kit. Each car is traveling abroad must have a label with the sign of the country of registration. Even if the car at the border without missing any traffic officer may require the label to stick.

Also, stores in the wallet for some money penalties. Keep in mind that in Europe for unfastened seat belt, even in the back seat will have to pay 100 euro. Penalties for violation of traffic rules there are much higher. Sizes range from tens to hundreds of Euros. The EU has created unified base offenses, including the SDA. Accordingly, failure to pay fines for minor traffic violations or serious misconducts in the future are fraught with the denial of visa to the EU agreement.

Foreign traffic police may prohibit operation of the vehicle or confiscate a driver's license for an accident with serious consequences for the temporary ban on the management of vehicles. But the deprivation of rights within the competence of the court and of traffic police in the community.

March project kit

Thought I'd share my latest creation with the March Project kit. While it is still a work in progress, I'm loving the details I am capturing in the month of April.
It all started when I somehow stumbled upon this mini book by Kelly Purkey and fell in love. I looked at the calendar with all our plans for the month of April and knew it would be a great month to document.
And so began the collecting of receipts and pieces of memorabilia throughout the month. From my gas receipts to the racing bib I'm collecting it all.
A trip to MGM Casino, two races, Lady Gaga concert and seeing
John Stewart are just a few of the highlights of my month. But there is also the high cost of gas and grocery that will be documented along with the day my husband joined the current technology and got himself a droid. (I wanted him to get an iphone, but that's another story)
It is still a work in progress as the month is not over yet, but I'm loving the process as it comes together while the month of April comes to a close.
