now this could make any rainy day perfect...

sar
Yeah yeah, I know it's easier for a camel to fit through the eye of a needle...

But this car is pure perfection. Someone at the gym I go to owns one of these and I have parked next to it a few times only to admire its sleek black and chrome exterior. Huhhhh....

So if I ever have $91,000 to drop on a car I will get a black Mercedes-Benz ML63. I have a feeling this is a decision I won't have to think about anytime in the near future. ;)

free printables...i live for these

As I was browsing some of my favorite graphic design blogs I found these free printables here at How about orange who found them here at Download & Print.

weekend yard-work (so grateful to have yard work)

We had this weird ivy patch in our front yard, I think it was intended for decoration. We dug up the ivy and will place weed barrier, bark and perennials in here.

Our goal last weekend was to get things cleaned up. We have a forest/jungle in our front yard that we tamed somewhat.

We have 20 trees, yes twenty trees in our fromt yard alone. There are about 5 varieties that my dad pruned for us. We have 6 trees in our backyard. That is after we cut down 5! But that is one thing I loved about the house, the mature trees (that are in bloom right now and very pretty).

We have ivy taking over the front yard area so my mother in law, my mom and I took out a small section near the entryway where I am going to plant perennials. We also had a big pine tree that was growing roots into our 70 year old clay plumbing pipes. My dad and and Steve's dad cut that down so hopefully that will help.

My dad pruning the trees in our yard. It kinda looks like the "grove" not to sound sacreligious, but really it does!

Here is just half of the the stuff we got rid of. We rented a uhaul truck today to take it to the dump.

Now it's time to plant and landscape.

ANZAC Day

Nana Thomas would tell me stories about her first husband Bert Sergent and how he died for his country. He was in the Special Z force in the AIF. It was called Operation Rimau. He was killed by the Japanese in July, 1945. He was 26. Nana passed away just over two weeks ago. She was 89.

Grandad was in the Army. For 5 years he served our country. He was a head mechanic. He would fix the army

what, how, why mom????....

"A University of Michigan study found that preschoolers ask info-seeking questions as 'why?'and 'how?' at the mom-boggling average rate of 76 an hour".

Thank you Parenting mag, this statement is one of the many reasons why my brain feels tired at the end of the day yet I feel like I slowly grow dumber....

National Arbor Day

National Arbor Day is celebrated on the last Friday of April every year. (Some states choose their own date for Arbor Day to coincide with the best planting weather for their area). So what is an arbor anyway? Arbor is the Latin word for tree. Arbor Day was established as a day for planting trees.

In 1854 a journalist named Julius Sterling Morton moved from Detroit, Michigan, a city with plenty of trees, to Nebraska, a state with few trees at the time. Mr. Morton and his wife were lovers of nature and particularly trees. They felt that Nebraska needed more trees for beautification, to serve as windbreaks to keep soil in place, to use for fuel and building materials, and for much needed shade. The Morton's gave inspiration to fellow Nebraskans by planting orchards, shade trees, and windbreaks on their own farm, as well as through articles Mr. Morton published in Nebraska's newspaper.

Later, Morton became the Secretary of the Nebraska Territory. While serving in this position he proposed a day for the planting of trees and to increase awareness of the importance of trees. Thus the first Nebraskan Arbor day was born on April 10, 1872. It was estimated that on that day more than one million trees were planted in Nebraska. In 1885 Arbor Day was named a legal holiday and moved to April 22 in honor of J. Sterling Morton's birthday.

In the 1870's other states passed legislation to observe Arbor Day. One hundred years later, in 1970, President Richard Nixon proclaimed the last Friday in April as National Arbor Day. Arbor Day is now observed all across the nation as well as in many nations around the world, although other nations call it by different names.

So how can we as individuals and families celebrate Arbor Day? Well, here are a few ideas:
  • Check out the trees on your property for broken branches, disease or insect infestation and take measures to fix the problem.
  • Take a trip to your local nursery to see what's available and get ideas.
  • Read a book about trees. Learn to identify trees in your yard and neighborhood.
  • Enjoy the outdoors. Visit a local park or go on a nature hike.
  • Attend a class on tree and plant care.
  • If you're feeling young and ambitious try to climb a tree, or enjoy a picnic under a shade tree.
  • Or, how about - Plant a tree!
I hope you all can take some time on Arbor Day to enjoy and appreciate the beauty of trees. Have a good one!

Predecessors Iron Man

Gigantor (One of Iron Man's more notable predecessors)

You think Iron Man was really original, don't you? Well, you're wrong. Iron Man had similar predecessor.

The first "Iron Man" was a real person: Lou Gehrig. He worked for the Ironman Batteries and was called Iron Horse, because he never got hurt in a baseball game. Illness made him too weak to play.

The second "Iron Man" was a Japanese cartoon character, who was known as Gigantor. He was originally called "Tetsujin" ("Iron Man"). He kinda looked like the original Iron Man.

Iron Man's next predecessor was Rocketman. He was a serial hero with an atomic-powered jet pack and a helmet that looks likes the original Iron Man's.

Stan Lee created a robot that was kinda a prototype-Iron Man that appeared in I Became A Human Robot!

Before the appearance of Stan Lee's Iron Man, there was a story called Man of Iron, which had the similar "iron lettering" Iron Man's logo.

How to Make a May Basket

May Day is celebrated on May 1st every year. One popular May Day tradition from long ago is the May Basket. People would hang a basket filled with spring flowers or small gifts and treats on a neighbor's doorknob. The idea is to get away without being caught or the neighbor can give you a kiss.

I made this May Basket using patterns and instructions from familyfun.go.com and nestlefamily.com

This is what you'll need:
  • Scrapbooking paper or card stock
  • Fine line scrapbooking pen
  • Lollipops (I used Dum Dums
  • Styrofoam cone
  • Scissors
  • Double-sided tape
  • Tacky glue
  • Standard hole punch
  • Ribbon
  • Trim to decorate cone.
Flowers:
1. For each, cut three heart-shaped petals (I used the smallest heart), two leaves and one flower center from scrapbook paper or card stock. (I made the leaf pattern by tracing the edge of a cup on the fold of a folded piece of card stock. I made the flower center pattern by tracing around a small medicine cup and then cutting wedges out.)

2. With a scrapbooking pen draw dashed lines on flower petals, solid lines on leaves, and squiggly lines on flower center.
3. Punch a small hole in each, crease the heart petals in half, and slide all pieces onto a lollipop stem. Tape the petals together with double-sided tape to secure.

Cone Basket:
1. Print out the cone-shaped template and trace onto a sheet of decorative paper. (Notice the straight sides should be 8 inches, click on the template to enlarge it).
2. Roll the paper into a cone shape and secure lengthwise with double-sided tape. The opening should be about 3 inches in diameter.
3. Punch a hole on each side of the cone about 1 inch from the top edge. Insert each end of a twenty inch ribbon through the holes and tie so the ribbon will not pull through the holes.
4. Embellish basket as desired with rick rack, beads or buttons.
5. Insert Styrofoam cone into basket and stick flowers in it. Voila, you're done!

fab weekend! food-family-fun

I must say, after moving from Salt Lake City it is much more fun to go into the "city". We had a wonderful weekend with our Idaho family. We had the "troops" helping us fix up and clean up our front and back yard. I can't wait to download the pictures and see all that we did. I am so amazed at the progress we all made and how hard everyone worked.

p.s. my mother in law is one amazing woman!!! Together we got a TON done, although she did about 70% of the work...I tried to keep up.

On Saturday night our family, Kent, Kathy, Dave and Hilary went to Bucca di Beppo for dinner. It was delicious! Dave found a piece of paper in his meal and got us all free desserts. Woo-hoo, thank you Dave and thank YOU tiny piece of paper!

cool headbands

It's cold and snowy. :( But a little brightness are these really cool metallic headbands. They are so different. I found these here on etsy.

Firebreather

Character Overview
Duncan Rosenblatt (full name is Duncan Xeres Absalom Wu Fan Cassius Draco Draconus Quetzelcoatl Gondwana Mjarl Khan Belloc-Rosenblatt Jr.) is a teenager with average teenage problems and one not so average problem: he the son a divorced "normal" human mother, who wants him to live a normal life; and a 300-foot dragon, who wants him to conquer the world and become king of monster. Duncan and his mom move a lot.
Firebreather Vol. 1 # 1-4
Duncan was having his first day another school, but both the principal and a bully named Troy are picking on him. To make this worst, his father was putting him through brutish training. Troy decides set up Rosenblatt by hiding a gun, this causes Duncan to question if should be in human society. When he gets home, he discovers that a monster destroyed his house and kidnapped his mom. He tracks the monster to Monster Island and burned it with his flame, but kept it alive. Belloc (his dad) comes and attacks the monster. Duncan figured out that his dad set this up to test him! He then threatens his father to kill him if he endanger his mother again. As Duncan leaves, Belloc says "That's my boy".
Firebreather: The Iron Saint (One Shot)
Duncan and his class are in London and hear about a suit of armor (the "Iron Saint"), created to kill monster. Duncan stays behind and the suit seemly comes to life! Actually, Mr. M (the guide) was wearing it and wanted to kill Duncan (his dad destroyed Mr. M's home), but the suit is ineffective, due to it cannot harms humans or the suit will be destoryed and Duncan is half one.
Powers and Abilities
Duncan has superhuman strength and durability. Like any dragon, Duncan can fly and (of course) breathe fire.

National Jelly Bean Day

National Jelly Bean Day is held every April 22nd. Not only is the origin of National Jelly Bean Day unknown, but the origin of the jelly bean itself is unclear. It is believed that the jelly bean is a descendant of a candy dating back to biblical times, called Turkish Delight. Turkish Delight is a sweet gummy confection much like the interior of a jelly bean.

Jelly beans are thought to have come into existence in France during the 1800's. The first known appearance of jelly beans in the U.S. was during the 1860's at the time of the Civil War. William Schrafft of Boston encouraged people to send candy, including jelly beans, to soldiers in the Union Army.

Today Jelly Beans have become especially popular at Easter time since they are the shape of an easter egg. Each year 16 billion Jelly Beans are made for Easter. That's enough Jelly Beans to fill a nine-story office building or circle the globe 3 times. At the height of the Beatles popularity, fans showered them, on and off stage, with jelly beans. Ronald Reagan, 40th President of the United States, was known to keep a jar of Jelly Belly jelly beans on his desk at all times.

My favorite Jelly Beans are undeniably Jelly Belly brand jelly beans. You can find a recipe page here at jellybelly.com showing you which combinations make yummy creations. My second favorite jelly beans are Starburst jelly beans. Starburst jelly beans are fruity and tangy, but not too tangy, I think you'd like them.

So whether you want to have a "How many jelly beans are in the jar contest?" or string them together to make a necklace or just gobble them down until you're sick, run, don't walk to your nearest candy store and buy a bag of your favorite kind! Happy National Jelly Bean Day folks!

We have a "Pop Corn Popping" tree!!

I don't know what these trees are called so my kids and I call it our "pop corn popping tree"! I am loving it. The blossoms are just beautiful and it makes me happy every time I look at our back/side yard and see it.

I love you Spring! (I am looking up the name of this tree tonight)

Spring!

In lieu of Spring my mom came over last Friday and took me to this amazing nursery called J & J Garden Center. It is located in Layton, if any of you are in that direction it would be well worth a look-see.

I bought some herbs to grow in our sun room as well as some hardy outdoor flowers. It is still a little early to plant flowers so I had to buy the ones that wouldn't die. But i love flowers outside the home and in the yard so I had to get something.

I had to share this photo of Mimi who dressed herself the other day...I love it!
