Father's Day Mini

Trish put together yet another fantastic project kit. This time it was to celebrate father's and honor them with a gift of photos and words. This kit is full of wonderful Basic Grey and Jenni Bowlin papers. Tags are perfectly stamped with images that are vintage and first rate. The book board is of the best quality and, held together with 7gypsies gaffer tape, makes for a great quality book and gift. That is just a few of the treats.
So, here's my take. (oh...and there are 2 left for purchase...{wink})

the cover. Basic Gray Life of the Party was used as the book cover. That wood grain is the best out there in my opinion. I need a case of it. I liked the idea of a 'door' being open to the past. (You will see what I mean in a minute). The gaffer tape was a little too white and bright for my liking, so I used a blending tool and Walnut Ink to age it up a bit. It worked perfect. Lovin' the blending tool these days. The Mono Letters were trimmed up so that they were not too uniform as a title.

inside. When you open the 'door', you are greeted by the little wooden owl who is holding up an envelope in which is hiding a little manila card that will hold some words of love for my Daddy. The envelope is also utilized to cover up the screw to the 7gypsies knob on the other side.

pages. I just had to share this photo as I adore all the banners and tags and tickets and journal spots peeking out from behind all the pages. It's my favorite part.

more pages. All the little mini-layouts cascade on top of the other. The pages each alternate with a different border punch to add texture and interest at the bottom. Notice the next page is the black scalloped one and it is slightly larger than the kraft with the lace border.

See how that works? This is truly a book that peeks into the past as it is made from photos my Dad just recently converted to digital from his stash of slides he took years, and years, and years, and years ago. {wink}. As soon as I saw Trish post this book for sale I knew what I wanted to do with this retro look into way back when.

Did you notice how I attached the binder mechanism? It is at the top of the back piece of the book board, and not in the binding of the book. Just wanted to change it up. I think it helped the pages (I have 15 total) lay better than if they were attached in the center.

Notice at this point in the book, I repeat the theme from the very first layout. The books mini-layouts are made up of only four sketches. As much a I was able with the supplies that I had, I repeated the theme every fourth page.

I tried really hard to stick with what was in the kit alone. There are a few additions. Of course there is plenty of paper punches from my stash. I supplemented the pattern paper with kraft and black cardstock that I had on hand. A few tickets and mini tags were thrown into the mix. Oh..and of course a doily or two.

last page. I used alot more of the Shabby Chic vintage labels in the back pages. Here is a scalloped label made into a flower. And a teenage version of me with feathered hair for your viewing pleasure.

Hoping you gained a little inspiration here today.

Traveling in style

With my Europe trip just three days away (oh my goodness, so much to do!), I am all about my packing list right now.  A few weeks ago I started shopping for a stylish passport cover online.  Of course, being the craft junkie that I am, I concluded that I could make a much more adorable cover than I could purchase! Well, with just over 72 hours until my departure, it is time to get working on it.  Here are some of the cute covers I found that I am using for inspiration:
My plan is to keep it fairly simple.  Just use cute fabrics and a great ribbon closure.  Can't wait to see how it turns out.

Those who know him consider him peculiar. Well, those who resent him, that is.Those who want to know him might say "eccentric" instead. Flip a Coin Day~June 1st

Quick Facts:
Always on June 1st
Creator and origin of Flip a Coin Day are unknown

Flip a Coin Day is a day to practice making decisions by using the flip of a coin. According to wordiQ, "Coin flipping is the practice of throwing a coin in the air to resolve a dispute between two parties [and I would add - or to make a decision regarding two possible alternatives to a question or problem]."

"Coin flipping is a method that trusts the decision to pure luck, since there is no possibility for strategy, and any attempt to alter the odds (such as, most obviously, using a fake coin with both sides the same) is considered cheating. It is generally assumed that the outcome is unpredictable, with equal probabilities for the two outcomes."

"Coin tossing is popular because it is fast, more or less fair, and requires nothing but a little spare change."

Coin Tossing in History
Julias Caesar - It is said that in ancient Rome during the reign of Julias Caesar, Caesar used the toss of a coin to make important decisions regarding things such as property disputes, marriage, and even criminal guilt. The image of Caesar's head was imprinted on one side of each coin, while something such as a ship was imprinted on the other. The side of the coin with Caesar's head was "heads" (obviously). When other people used the flip of a coin to make decisions, they believed if it landed on "heads" it was a sign that Caesar approved of the decision.

Sigmund Freud - According to Wikipedia, Sigmund Freud used the technique of flipping a coin to help people make difficult decisions, "not actually to determine the decision, but to clarify the decision-maker's feeling. He explained: 'I did not say you should follow blindly what the coin tells you. What I want you to do is to note what the coin indicates. Then look into your own reactions. Ask yourself: Am I pleased? Am I dissappointed? That will help you to recognize how you really feel about the matter, deep down inside. With that as a basis, you then will be ready to make up your mind and then come to the right decision.' "

Ritchie Valens - Ritchie Valens was a young Mexican-American singer, songwriter, and guitarist who quickly rose to fame in the late 1950's with hit songs like Donna and La Bamba. On the fateful night of February 2, 1959, after a concert in Clear Lake, Iowa, fellow performer, Buddy Holly, chartered a plane to fly he and some of his guys on to the next city on the concert tour. There were only four seats on the plane with one of those belonging to the pilot, Roger Peterson. Scheduled to ride in the plane were: Buddy Holly, Waylon Jennings, and Tommy Allsup. J.P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson became ill with a fever and asked Waylon Jennings if he could take his seat on the plane. Jennings agreed. Later, Ritchie Valens, who had never flown in a small plane before, approached Tommy Allsup and asked if he would give up his seat on the plane. Tommy suggested they flip a coin, and drew a 50-cent piece out of his pocket. That fateful coin toss placed Ritchie Valens, age 17, on the plane with Buddy Holly, J.P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson, and the pilot Roger Peterson. Sadly, a sudden snowstorm arose which was believed to make visibility for the pilot difficult. Shortly after midnight, on the morning of February 3, 1959, the small plane crashed shortly after takeoff killing all four people on board.

(There have been disputes as to the validity of the coin toss story.)

For the Love of Words!

Anyone who knows me knows I love words and the alphabet! I even documented this recently on a page I made for How Much Is Too Much:

I recently stumbled upon a site called The Visual Dictionary when I accidentally typed dictionary instead of thesaurus as I was searching for the Visual Thesaurus (which is so cool and so amazing, and one of these days I'm going to cave and buy a subscription!).

The Visual Dictionary is a collection of photographs of single words found in the real world--on signs, graffiti, tattoos, and the like. You can browse the collection randomly, or search using a specific word. Here are results from searching for the words life, is, and good. (I pasted screen shots together so you could see them all together.)

They even have collections of numbers, which is really cool:

The neat thing about The Visual Dictionary is that the photographs are submitted by users. I'm going to keep an eye out for interesting signage and be a contributer.

I wondered if there was a similar site that had single letters. I found lots of commercial sites that had photographs of alphabets, like Alphabet Photography, but I couldn't find one like the Visual Dictionary. Instead, I discovered a trend called "found alphabets." There are lots of people, it seems, looking for the alphabet in everyday objects. There's even a Found Alphabet flickr group.

I did a google search for Found Alphabet, and here are some really cool images I found. This one from flickr from someone named Chelsea Sektnan:

How about these images found by Rachel Young using Google aerial maps of Britain:

These letters are really neat--Eine’s East End of London shopfront shutter letters, found on Dave Gorman’s Flickr pages:

This collection is pretty, from someone named Anniemarie:

Photographer Eric Tabuchi photographed trailer trucks on empty highways, each bearing one letter of the alphabet. How clever!

And finally, this lovely collection of black and white images from photographer Abba Richman:

So what does all this have to do with paper crafting? I see fantastic possibilities of using such images for titles. Or how cool would it be to challenge yourself to search for words and letters in the world to photograph? I can imagine a fun field trip with the kids to do this! And here's a neat idea I found--use these kinds of images to create cards, like this one I found from Rees Digital Photography:

I hope you've enjoyed looking the images I found. If you find a source like The Visual Dictionary for letters, please let me know. And if you've got some ideas for how to put such images to work on a scrapbook page, I'd love to hear them!

RECIPE: The Chocolate Cake (I made for Memorial Day)

I have made this recipe 3 times since my sister from Rozlynn's Homemade Goodness made it while visiting a couple of weeks ago. The first 2 times were at the request of Steve and the 3rd time was for Memorial Day.

So if you want to make the most divine, rich and moist chocolate cake ever then here is the recipe for you.

Chocolate Sheet Cake
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 cups sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup butter (1 cube)
1/2 cup vegetable oil
4 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
1 cup water
1/2 cup whole buttermilk
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon white vinegar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 large eggs

Begin by setting the oven to 350 degrees. Spray a 13x9-inch baking pan with a non-stick cooking spray, then coat with flour. Set aside

In a kitchen aid bowl or regular bowl combine the flour, sugar and salt. Sift. Then set aside.

In a medium to large saucepan whisk together the butter, oil, cocoa and water. Bring to just a boil over medium-high heat. Make sure you stir constantly to prevent burning and stir until all ingredients are melted and smooth. Once completed add the chocolate mixture to the dry ingredients, mixing at medium speed. Then add the buttermilk, baking soda, vinegar, vanilla and eggs. Mix until pretty and smooth.

Pour the batter into the prepared 13x9-inch pan. Bake for 30 minutes or until when a butter knife is inserted it comes out clean. It took my cake about 35 minutes to bake (as always, ancient oven). While the cake is in the oven baking, start getting the ingredients together for the chocolate icing. When the timer has about 5-8 minutes left I start the icing recipe (see below).

Chocolate Icing
1/2 cup butter
4 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
6 tablespoons whole milk
1 (16-ounce) confectioners' sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Using a medium saucepan bring to a boil the butter, cocoa and milk; stirring constantly. Remove from the heat and add the confectioners' sugar and vanilla. Then transfer the icing mixture to a bowl or your Kitchen Aid and mix it add medium speed until it is smooth and creamy.

Once your sheet cake is done, take it out of the oven and using a fork poke holes in the cake (I did it all over). You then take the chocolate icing and while the cake is hot, pour the icing evenly over the cake. Let the cake cool completely before
serving.

Above is what it will look like when it is finished. It is so so so delicious!

I Love This

This is the touching declaration from General John A. Logan, National Commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, given shortly after the end of the Civil War, proclaiming May 30th as Decoration Day (now known as Memorial Day).

HEADQUARTERS GRAND ARMY OF THE REPUBLIC
General Orders No. 11, Washington, D.C. May 5, 1868

i. The 30th day of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing flowers or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village, and hamlet church-yard in the land. In this obervance no form of ceremony is prescribed, but posts and comrades will in their own way arrange such fitting services and testimonials of respect as circumstances may permit.

We are organized, comrades, as our regulations tell us, for the purpose among other things, "of preserving and strengthening those kind and fraternal feelings which have bound together those soldiers, sailors, and marines who united to supress the late rebellion." What can aid more to assure this result than cherishing tenderly the memory of our heroic dead, who made their breasts a barricade between our country and it's foes? Their soldier lives were the revielle of freedom to a race in chains, and their deaths the tattoo of rebellios tyranny in arms. We should guard their graves with sacred vigilance. All that the consecrated wealth and taste of the nation can add to their adornment and security is but a fitting tribute to the memory of her slain defenders. Let no wanton foot tread rudely on such hallowed grounds. Let pleasant paths invite the coming and going of reverent visitors and fond mourners. Let no vandalism of avarice or neglect, no ravages of time testify to the present or the coming generations that we have forgotten as a people the cost of a free and undivded republic.

If other eyes grow dull, other hands slack, and other hearts cold in the solemn trust, ours shall keep it well as long as the light and warmth of life remain in us.

Let us, then, at the time appointed gather around their sacred remains and garland the passionless mounds above them with the choicest flowers of springtime; let us raise above them the dear old flag they saved from dishonor; let us in this solemn presence renew our pledges to aid and assist those whom they have left among us a sacred charge upon a nation's gratitude, the soldier's and sailor's widow and orphan.

ii. It is the purpose of the Commander-in-Cheif to inagurate this observance with the hope that it will be kept up from year to year, while a survivor of the war remains to honor the memory of his departed comrades. He earnestly desires the public press to lend it's freindly aid in bringing to the notice of comrades in all parts of the country in time for simultaneous compliance therewith.

iii. Department Commanders will use efforts to make this order effective.

By order of
JOHN A. LOGAN,
Commander-in-Cheif

N.P. CHIPMAN,
Adjutant General

What Are the Main Tourist Attractions in Europe?

People who love to travel the world and enjoy discovering interesting, amazing, fun-filled and intriguing sites are often drawn to the attractions in Europe. With such a vast array of tourist attractions and diverse destinations, which are all in fairly close proximity, Europe is undoubtedly a great place to take a vacation.

Whether the traveler wants to enjoy a wonderfully romantic vacation, an engaging and activity-filled family vacation, or just a leisurely, quiet and relaxing getaway, European destinations should be on high on the list potential travel spots. With an array of attractions in every European country, there is going to be something that appeals to everyone, since there is a multitude of things to see and to do. There are many, very valid reasons why a European vacation consistently stands out as a favorite of world travelers, since it includes some of the best travel destinations in the world.

There is an amazing amount of history that one can see in diverse attractions in towns and cities all across Europe. For the traveler who is enthralled with ancient history, the venerable ruins and museums of both Greece and Rome are sites that simply must not be missed and which are always a strong draw.

In addition, Rome also holds an enormous amount of religious significance for countless people. Rome not only houses several beautiful and noteworthy Christian cathedrals, it is also the portal to the Vatican and Vatican city, which is actually a tiny country in and of itself.

There are also fabulous historical attractions in other cities and countries of Europe as well. The formidable medieval castles and spectacular cathedrals that can be found throughout Spain, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, and many other countries are fascinating for travelers to explore, as most tours of castles and cathedrals are more like fabulous art history and art museum excursions.

These medieval attractions in all parts of Europe also provide the visitors with unique insights into the lives of the people who lived in the middle ages. Walking through the courtyards, halls, and sanctuaries that were built through the hard work, craftsmanship, and devotion of the people of the time provides a connection to those responsible for the creation of these spectacular monuments that are still enjoyed and marveled at today.

Ireland is host to some amazing insights into their rich and ancient culture. The emerald isle has many peaceful local attractions throughout the serene and charming towns and the beautiful coastlines and landscapes of the island, as well as many splendid cathedrals and chapels from antiquity to explore.

The countries of Germany, Poland and France provide sobering and meaningful tourist attractions, as they are a connection to the two world wars and the cold war which held so many people of Europe in control for so many decades. The history museum sites in those countries help visitors understand the tragedies of war and the triumph of freedom and democracy.

On a less somber note, the countries of Italy, Spain and Greece each have a multitude of beaches that are sun drenched most of the year and are the perfect place for a couple that is looking for a bit of romance and a respite from the more hectic attractions in the cities. There are countless resorts on every section of the Mediterranean shore that will welcome and pamper the weary travelers.

Smores anyone?

It's been a Smores kinda weekend around the Liebel household & the kids have been LOVIN' it. This classic sweet treat is the best of the best. My kids can never have too many.

Found this image on Pinterest last week & thought I'd give it a try...Smores with peanut butter cup. If you are a peanut or peanut butter lover, you'll enjoy this :) DELISH!!!

Have a WONDERFUL Memorial Day!! Cheers :)

Memorial Day Prep

We are getting ready for our annual Memorial Day Nelson reunion. My parents host this event because my dad bought the family property about 4 years ago and built a home on it.

Above is my parents huge English Mastiff, and I swear he gets bigger every time I see him. From the back he looks like a mountain lion. But you couldn't find a more gentile, docile dog anywhere. He's our gentile giant.

Hen-hen (above with a neighbor girl) loves his woody doll and always looks at him and says, "Hi Woody!".

We came up for the weekend to help, although I think we add more chaos than help to the Memorial Day preparations.

The kids love to be at Grandma's house and play and play! She lets them roam free amongst all her paintings and antiques. And yes, my kids have broken a number of treasures, but not once has she ever gotten mad or upset with them about it. Few!
