Red light enforcement funding distributed for safety improvements

More than $400,000 in Automated Red Light Enforcement (ARLE) funding will be distributed to two municipalities located in PennDOT’s District 3-0 area. Statewide, $1.5 million in grants are being distributed to 26 municipalities.

Under the state law that established ARLE, fines from infractions are evenly divided between the city of Philadelphia and PennDOT. The cameras are located at 19 intersections and Philadelphia is the only city with ARLE in the state.
The law specifies that projects improving safety, enhancing mobility and reducing congestion can be considered for funding. Municipalities submitted more than 300 applications, totaling $27.3 million. Projects were chosen under criteria including project benefits and effectiveness, cost, local and regional impact, and cost sharing.
The two projects awarded in District 3-0 are:

• Towanda Borough traffic signal rehabilitation, $225,000;
• Troy Borough traffic signal enhancement project, $190,000.
