Robert Irwin Fiscus, Taft, CA, Sinnemahoning Native

Taft, Calif. —Robert Irwin Fiscus was born May 2, 1920 to James and Edna (Logue) Fiscus in Sinnamehoning, PA and passed away on February 28, 2012 in Bakersfield, CA.

He was one of nine children, seven having survived.

Upon leaving high school, after the start of WW II, Robert showed great prowess in mechanics, scholastics and particularly engineering. High AGCT scores landed him the opportunity to attend Yale University, specializing in aircraft engineering and he graduated in the top percentile of his class.

He worked his way up the ranks to Second Lt. in charge of B-29 Bomber Service Operations and hundreds of servicemen. After being honorably discharged in 1944, he hitch-hiked his way to California settling in Taft in the late '40s.

In 1949, Bob took a job at a Mobil Gas Station in Maricopa where he not only became owner/proprietor but met the love of his life, the former Aileen Rowe. The two were married in 1950 and enjoyed 61 years together raising two children and making their home in Maricopa, CA.

Bob took employment with Standard Oil Co. of California (now Chevron USA) in 1951, retiring in 1983 as a construction technologist in engineering. Bob was a founding member of Sovale Credit Union (now Chevron Valley.) He was a Maricopa City Councilman from 1968 – 1972. He served on the board of the Local Agency Formation Commission (L.A.F.C.O.) and was a founding member of Kern Co. Council of Governments. Mr. Fiscus also served as Board President of the First Congregational Church of Maricopa from 1975 to the mid '90s. He was also responsible for much of the remodeling of that historic building.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Edna Fiscus; his brothers, Jay, Ray and Tracy Fiscus; sisters, Lola Jordan, Celesta Dempsey, Reva Johnson and Verlyn and Charlotte Fiscus. He is survived by his wife, Aileen Fiscus of Maricopa; son, Gary (Eileen) Fiscus of Prospect, VA, son, Michael Fiscus of Emporium, PA, Daughter, Suzy (L.D. Armstrong) Jackson of Taft, and son, Jim Fiscus of Taft; grandchildren, Kevin, David and Mark Fiscus, Emily Maze, Christina Lindsay and Lacy, Kenny and Derik Casparis; 10 loving great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, March 5, 2012 , at 1:00 p.m. in the Erickson & Brown Funeral Home Chapel, 501 Lucard St., Taft, CA. Interment will follow at the West Side District Cemetery. Viewing will be held on Sunday, March 4, 2012, from 3:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and again on Monday from 9:00 a.m. to service time at the Erickson & Brown Funeral Home.
