"The Artist" charms, earns Audience Award at Hamptons film festival – AWARDS ALLEY

By Sean O'Connell Hollywoodnews.com: Michel Hazanavicius's "The Artist" continued to bolster its reputation as a crowd-pleaser, earning the audience award for best narrative film at the 19th annual Hamptons International Film Festival on Sunday evening.

The black-and-white and largely silent tribute to Hollywood's Golden Age picked up a similar trophy at the San Sebastian film festival earlier this year. The film has been generating favourable awards buzz since earning a Palme d'Or nomination in Cannes (where delightful lead Jean Dujardin collected the Best Actor prize). Stops in Telluride, Toronto and New York only boosted the film's awards profile, and experts expect it to contend in several Oscar categories as the awards marathon continues.

Even detractors, which point at the film's thin plot, admit that it's charms likely will entice Academy members who'll fondly remember how pictures used to be made.

The film, which is being released by the Weinstein Co., opens in the U.S. on Nov. 23.
