I started making these Edible Scarecrow Heads a couple years back, and I have to say, it is one of my favorite things to do every season. Same concept as making the Edible Snowmen Heads, really. I came up with the idea after making those one year, and this is what I came up with!
Start off with a good Popcorn Ball (I purchase mine--gasp!). Make sure they're good and hard, not soft and gooey or the whole project will flop. Trust me here.
Stick a lollipop stick into it while it is in the bag (less mess that way.)
Next, set your environment up for success and set up your assembly line. Line a few cookie sheets with waxed paper. Have your noses (Bugles dipped in orange chocolate, hardened and cold, ready to go), large and small chocolate chips, shredded wheat cereal (some of it actually shredded), and straw hats (embellished however you'd like), all ready to go.
Now, dip the ball into melted peanut butter chocolate (also purchased at the craft/baking supply store--I use Wilton). You'll want to scrape some of of the chocolate off using a spatula.
Next, set the wet ball onto a small pile of shredded wheat cereal, and get it to "stand". As the chocolate sets and hardens, you'll want to watch it closely. When it starts to soften, add the nose to the middle of the face. I use Dixie cups to hold it there (or see the Edible Snowman Post for a look.) Next, do the eyes (regular sized chocolate chips) and the mouth (smaller mini chocolate chips).
Lastly, I add shredded wheat cereal up around the top. I add "bangs" so it frames the faces of the scarecrows nicely. Lastly, I poke a hole into the top of the hats (purchased at a local craft store), and slide the lollipop stick down so the hat sticks onto the head. Smash it on there firmly so it doesn't go anywhere.
Aren't they cute? I make them in batches of 6 (that is how many I get on a cookie sheet). Give them a try! Bag them up in 6" cello bags, and distribute to friends and neighbors to share.
Next attempt--using green chocolate, a witches hat, and chow mein noodles for my version of a witch. Look out people, I'm on a roll here! :)
Enjoy your day!
