My Dad.

Last week, Tina blogged about a book/video that spoke to her.  She shared the book (Days With My Father) with me at a crop. It spoke to me, too. You see, we both are the "sandwich" generation--taking care of aging parents, and taking care of our children. Having a parent with memory problems is a problem with which we both are familiar. I cried reading the last few pages of that book.
I cried, but I was also incredibly inspired.  Inspired in a way I hadn't been in a while.  A couple days later, I made it a point to take my camera to my parent's home, and take pictures differently.

Out of respect for my Dad, I hadn't really taken "real" photos of him for some time.  After his stroke 6 years ago, his body and his personality were completely transformed.  He spent 8 months in a rehab facility, learning to do everything all over.  A year later, he fell and  shattered his hip, requiring another stay in an extended care facility.  Not an easy pill to swallow for a former marathon runner and fitness fanatic.  I'd be angry, too.  When his mother suffered 10 years with Alzheimer's, he spoke about how he never would want to go out like that.  Watching her struggle was so painful for him, and he didn't wish that on anyone. So with dignity in mind, I'm always careful photographing him.

His stroke also changed his personality.  Growing up, he was the most positive, motivational person in my life.  Our educational options were, "What college are you attending?"  He knew education was the key to the foundation of any adult life, and preached about it.  He told us we could do anything if we put our mind to it.  And my sisters and I believed him.  As with most strokes, the brain damage resulted in a drastic personality shift.  He is able to be pleasant, but for the most part, is only so for short time periods.  Small things upset him greatly.  So sad sometimes.  I miss that man.

He hates having his picture taken.  I got my love of photography from him.  We're used to being behind the lens, not in front.  Usually, the hand in front of his face accompanies a tongue sticking out of his mouth and a groan.
My mom and I constantly nag at him to keep his feet up.  They're always swollen.  It is so painful for him to just walk.  But he isn't a good patient.  He does whatever he wants, when he wants.  When he does comply, it's a big deal.  I told him I'd stop taking pictures if he put them up.  (I lied.)

He misses using a straight razor.  The little things are sometimes the things you miss the most, he says.  I get that.

He took a bad spill in June, leaving a bad gash on his forehead.  It is still healing.  He goes everywhere with his walker now.
Always within reach are the remote, several Western books, a napkin, and his glasses.  He keeps his radio, the newspaper, his shoes, and earphones nearby as well.

He often speaks of how he's got to build up his muscles so he can start jogging again.  He gave me $10 to buy him a ten speed bike at a garage sale last week.  I didn't have the heart to break the news to him, so I went along with it.  I told him it sold before I got there.
He and my mom are both home-bound because of health issues.  They live in the house we grew up in, a mile from my home now.  I love being so close to them.  I see them almost daily.

My parents enjoy driving the other nuts.  They get bored and get under the other's skin on a regular basis.  Sometimes it is sad.  Sometimes it is annoying.  Most all the time, it is comical to see one of them geeked up about zinging the other one on purpose.  What can I say...we're twisted like that.

Crazy-expensive high-tech chair that he hates.  He sits in it incorrectly just to drive me nuts, and then laughs when I comment on it.  Part of the dance we do.
Dad, with our son, Griffin.  This is the type of picture I used to take.  Nothing wrong with that at all.  In fact, I like this shot quite a lot.  But I'm not going to ignore the other stuff anymore.  The chair, the walker, the real details.  Wishing things were different isn't going to change what really exists.  I have been so focused on telling our kids what my father was like growing up, simply because I didn't want them to think my Dad was this mean, bitter old guy who swears all them all the time (which quite honestly,is an accurate description of who he is now--despite the smile on his face in the photo.)  My focusing on the past hasn't allowed me to be fully present with him TODAY.
For what it is worth, I hope someone else hears that today.
Here is the online version of the book.  Worth the 10 minutes to read, for sure.

Thank you, Tina.  I love you for sharing this!

Enjoy your day...

Happy Halloween!

Witches Brew Recap

A few years back, I started an annual party called "The Witches Brew Tea." It is a night where my friends and family(ladies only) gather to celebrate Halloween.  My rules are simple...everyone is required to wear a hat.  It has been so much fun to build the party a little more each year. This year's witches brew was a so much fun!  I loved the company, the food and the ambiance. The menu for the bash included: baked potato soup with bacon, cheese, chive and sour cream toppings; bread bowls; green salad; pumpkin and chocolate pumpkin cupcakes and sugar cookies.
For drinks, I served Sprite, Gingerale, and Cream Soda with Grenadine, Lime and Grape syrups.  Of course I dressed the bottles up with spooky labels and Halloween patterned paper.  I also fancied up the cups with a barber pole straw, spider, and lime.
The cupcakes were a real hit, so I thought I would share the recipes with you.  Also, check out the previous post for the free download of the cupcake toppers.
Cupcake Hints-
-Use an extra large star tip and a pastry bag to frost cupcakes
-Use a plain cupcake liner to bake the cupcake, then place the cooked cupcake into another decorative liner after it has cooled.

Pumpkin Cupcakes
Ingredients
2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 heaping teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/2 heaping teaspoon ground ginger
1/2 heaping teaspoon ground cloves
1/2 heaping teaspoon ground allspice
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1 cup white sugar
1/3 cup brown sugar
2 eggs
3/4 cup half and half
1 1/4 cup pumpkin puree
1/4 cup applesauce

Cinnamon Cream Cheese Frosting
1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened
1/4 cup butter, softened
1/4 heavy whipping cream
3 cups confectioners' sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Directions
  1. Preheat an oven to 350 degrees F. Grease 24 muffin cups, or line with paper muffin liners. Sift together the flour, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, clove, allspice, salt, baking powder, and baking soda; set aside.
  2. Beat oil, the white sugar, and brown sugar with an electric mixer in a large bowl until light and fluffy. The mixture should be noticeably lighter in color. Add the eggs one at a time, allowing each egg to blend into the mixture before adding the next. Stir in the half and half, applesauce and pumpkin puree after the last egg. Stir in the flour mixture, mixing until just incorporated. Pour the batter into the prepared muffin cups.
  3. Bake in the preheated oven until golden and the tops spring back when lightly pressed, about 20 minutes. Cool in the pans for 5 minutes before removing to cool completely on a wire rack.
  4. While the cupcakes are cooling, make the frosting by beating the cream cheese and 1/4 butter with an electric mixer in a bowl until smooth. Beat in the confectioners' sugar a little at a time until incorporated. Add the vanilla extract and 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon; beat until fluffy. Once the cupcakes are cool, frost with the cream cheese icing.

Chocolate Pumpkin Cupcakes
Ingredients
1 (18.25 ounce) package chocolate cake mix
1 (15 ounce) can pumpkin
1/4 cup water
2 eggs
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
Pumpkin pie spice as desired
Chocolate Cream Cheese Frosting
3/4 (6 ounces) package cream cheese, softened
1/4 cup butter, softened
1/4 heavy whipping cream
1 cup cocoa
3 cups confectioners' sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease or line cupcake tins.
  2. In a large bowl, mix the cake mix, pumpkin, eggs and oil for 3 minutes using a mixer on medium speed. Pour into the prepared pan and spread evenly.
  3. Bake for 20 minutes in the preheated oven, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool, then frost with cream cheese frosting.
We had some great witches outfits, but I believe the greatest hat award went to my friend Kirsten who created this beautiful headpiece with a selection of florals adhered to a headband.
Hope you all have a wonderful Halloween tomorrow!  Watch out for the tricks and eat lots of treats!

Marvelman

The creators of Captain Marvel was sued by DC Comics for "copying" Superman. So, in Britain, Mick Anglo created a rip-off called Marvelman. Marvelman was cut and paste Captain Marvel. Micky Morgan gain the power to become Marvelman (who had Captain Marvel-like powers) by saying "Kimota" ("Atomik" backwards) by an astrophysicist. He has two sidekicks: Dicky Dauntless aka Young Marvel and Jonny Bates aka Kid Marvelman (rip offs of Captain Marvel Jr. and Mary Marvel). They had bland adventures until they were canceled in February 1963.

Marvelman became a strip for Warrior. Alan Moore wrote Marvelman, which was the first superhero he wrote, with darker themes. An adult Micheal Morgan is a reporter who can't remember his adventures as Marvelman until he accidentally see "atomic" backwards and say it. Uttering the word (which is pronounced like "Kimota") turns him into Marvelman. He regain his memories but no one remembers Marvelman save for comic books. He battles against a power-mad Kid Marvel, resulting his in his innocent alter ego going insane with guilt. Marvelman manages to muscle his way into a secret bunker, where he discover the truth: he was part of "Project Zarathustra", where the government tested alien tech on human resulting in them gaining superpowers. Said humans were unconscious and had their mind fed comic book adventures as memories. On their "last " mission, the government tried to blow them with a nuclear weapon because the project was terminated. Marvelman turned to normal and lost his memories, but Young Marvelman was killed. Marvelman discover his wife is going have a child who could become the first naturally born superhuman. Warrior stopped at issue 21. Due to pressure from Marvel Comics, the hero was changed to Miracleman. He got his own series that lasted for 16 issues. Two alien races called the Warpsmiths and the Qys come to Earth. We discover there are other native superhumans on Earth. The aliens, Miracleman, the brand new Miraclewoman and their allies have a gory battle with a now insane Kid Miracleman (he is Kid Marvelman). The battle kills 40000 people and ends with Miracleman killing KM in his non-power form to prevent him from going on another ramage. In the last issue, the superhumans take over the world and are worshiped as gods. This series is characterized by extreme violent and gore that was to such a degree that was never seen before.

Neil Gaiman took over the series at issue 17. He plotted the series to have three books: "The Golden Age", "The Silver Age" and "The Dark Age". In "Golden Age", Miracleman and superhumans make the world a utopia via alien tech. Although, Miracleman question they are doing the right thing. This volume focuses the people affected by these event a la The Sandman. Neil Gaiman finished the first two issues of "The Silver Age", but didn't actually finish it. In the issues he did finish, Kid Miracleman was brought back...again.

Marvel Comic has gained the rights to the character. They plan to reprint various stories. They are trying to sort out some the copyright debates.

FREE CUPCAKE TOPPER DOWNLOAD

I am sure many of you are busy getting ready for Halloween on Monday. I thought I would share a little help from my Witches Brew (pictures to come soon)this week. As one of the desserts, I served pumpkin and chocolate/pumpkin cupcakes. To top them off I created some festive Halloween Picks.  To create these picks for your Spooky goodies, simply download the pattern, punch out the designs with a 1 1/2" circle punch and back with a scalloped circle punch.  I added a toothpick so that they would stick easily into the cupcake frosting.
Hope you all have a wonderfully Haunted Holiday!

Leftover Sticker Rolls

Ask for leftover sticker rolls at your nearest Scrapbook store. I've done this craft every year, since our kids were little...
Cover the sticker roll with white paper, then wrap in gauze or cheesecloth.  Add googlie eyes, and insert a cup so the candy doesn't fall out.
They're easy and fun, and the kids LOVE THEM!
Enjoy your day!
