How to Choose a Watermelon

Have you ever wanted to know the best way to choose a good watermelon at a fruit stand or grocery store? While a big part of good watermelon picking involves luck, there are a few basic tips to help prevent you from going at it blind.
  • Shape: A good watermelon should be symmetrical and firm. No obvious flat spots or soft spots.
  • Color: Should be a nice dark-ish green color except for- the "field spot" which is the side that was laying on the ground. This spot should be a buttery yellow color which indicates that the melon has been allowed to ripen in the sun. If the spot is white or there is no spot, it will not be as sweet.
  • Weight: Since a watermelon is 92% water it should be heavy for it's size. Pick up a few that are the same size in the bin and keep the heaviest.
  • The Thump Test: Pick up the watermelon and hold it away from your body if you can (it may help to have someone come with you to the store). Knock on the watermelon just as you would knock on a door. It should have a hollow sound.
Note that the thumping method can be a little tricky and usual requires years of trial and error. If you employ the three other tips above, you should be in good shape. Good Luck!
