What you'll need to create toppers of your own:
1. Die-cuts (My Mind's Eye is a great resource for pre-made adorable die-cuts) or paper pieced item
2. Stickers, embellishments, ribbon (get creative and spice up your creation)
3. Toothpicks or skewers
4. Adhesive
THE MONOGRAM
A monogram topper is a fun way to celebrate a special individual. It is also great for weddings!
To create a monogram topper:
1. Cut 2 of a large letter from heavy patterned paper. I used the My Mind's Eye Lime Twist line for this "M". You want to cut your letters in reverse of each other so that you can sandwich them back to back. (I used my Silhouette digital cutter to cut my monogram, but you could print a large letter on your computer, cut it out and trace it onto patterned paper if you don't have access to a digital cutter)
2. Use adhesive to place toothpicks or skewers at secure points along the base of the letter. Adhere the picks so they stick out a few inches from the letter.
3. Glue Letters together.
4. Add ribbons, bling, ink or any other decorations you desire.
5. Place the topper in the cake.
THE SILHOUETTE
There is nothing as simple and classy as a silhouette. I love the idea of topping off a wedding cake with a bridal silhouette cut from paper.
To create this topper, I used my Silhouette digital cutter and the new My Mind's Eye Lost and Found line to cut the bride and groom. I then used varying sizes of paper flower punches and a smattering of decorative My Mind's Eye brads to add dimension to the decorations.
To create this cake on your own:
2. Cut 2 silhouettes from the template (back to back)
3. Use adhesive to glue silhouettes together with toothpicks or skewers sandwiched between.
4. Place silhouette in cake.
5. Add additional flowers and decorations as needed. Toothpicks can stick into brads or be glued directly to the flower. You can also sandwich the toothpick between two flowers if you want it to be double sided.
I also created a mini version of the silhouette bride and groom to place on a cupcake. I love the idea of creating matching cupcakes to serve guests at a large event. I create this topper in the same way as the large topper, just on a smaller scale.
PAPER PIECED THEME TOPPER
If you enjoy creating your own paper pieced art, a cake is the perfect way to show off your talent! I created this baby carriage on my Silhouette digital cutter, but you can download the pattern to hand-cut your own here.
I created a second skewer for this cake so that my sign could sit at a different angle than the carriage.
And a cupcake to match
CUPCAKE LOVIN
A My Mind's Eye die-cut, some curly-q wire and this cupcake was good to go. I cut a strip of coordinating paper to sandwich the wire and the die cut together.
This cupcake was creating using a My Mind's Eye sticker, a circle punch and ribbon. I love the idea of adding a second pick with a name or title on it. To little flags can be added so easily by wrapping a sticker or paper around a pick.
It has been so long since I designed an owl for Studio 5, I just had to add this one! For a different look, use a tall BBQ skewer and layer paper pieced works with titles and ribbon. You could also do the same type of pick with a cute decorative pencil that they "eater" could take home.
A special thanks to Dick's Market in Bountiful who provided all of the cakes and cupcakes for this segment! Also, be sure to check out My Mind's Eye's new releases. They are, as always, ADORABLE!
